Basics for Believers by D.A. Carson | Review

basics for believers

This book by D.A. Carson is a study of Philippians that was originally published in 1996. Carson goes through the book of Philippians and how that book outlines the basics of our beliefs as Christians. He shares his analysis/opinions on the topics raised in the book of Philippians.

My favorite thing about this book is how they actually printed the verses he was talking about at the beginning of the chapter. I am so used to studies just printing the range of verses, and then you’re supposed to get out your Bible and read it there. However, I rarely carry my Bible around when I’m reading at work or in a car, so it was so nice having it printed right there so you don’t have to go back and forth.

However, I didn’t like this book very much. The writing was so dry and it was hard to pay attention, so I really did get much out of it. He really droned on a lot. Also, I hate when books like this are completely impersonal. We do not learn anything abut D.A. Carson in his book, he doesn’t share personal stories to drive home his points. To me, it seemed like a lot of words with very little meaning or impact.

I gave this 2/5 stars.
